Media Release: On World Drought Day, BC Coalition Calls for Provincial Action on Drought and Water Scarcity
June 17, 2026BC Watershed Security Coalition Commitment to Reconciliation
Strengthening watershed security and advancing reconciliation go hand in hand and benefit everyone.
As a Coalition, we recognize and celebrate the stewardship of First Nations who have cared for the rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands of British Columbia for generations. Their leadership reminds us that water connects us all, and that by caring for it together, we strengthen the future for all communities and all living things.
Water offers common ground — a shared responsibility and a shared opportunity to build trust, understanding, and stronger relationships.
Our coalition recognizes and affirms Indigenous rights as fundamental human rights and is committed to building strong, long-term partnerships with First Nations grounded in listening, learning, and respect. We are also committed to supporting broader awareness of the history, leadership, and ongoing role of First Nations in caring for watersheds, and the importance of upholding Indigenous rights in this shared work.
Across the province, coalition members are working in partnership with First Nations to protect and restore watershed health. By bringing Indigenous and non-Indigenous people together, these partnerships are delivering tangible outcomes for water, people, fish, and wildlife while strengthening relationships built on collaborative action and mutual respect.
Our coalition will continue to build relationships with First Nations, support Indigenous rights and leadership, and work together to secure the watersheds that sustain us all.
